Bespoke caftan in Marrakech: how it works
Measurements, fabric choice, colour sample, embroidery, fittings, timing: the full run-through of a bespoke caftan or takchita order in Marrakech, in person or remotely.
Bespoke is the heart of the trade: a piece made for one person, one colour, one occasion. Here is how an order works at Tazi Caftan, step by step.
1. The opening conversation
We start by talking about the occasion (wedding, engagement, Eid, family ceremony), the role (bride, mother, guest, groom), the season and the budget. These four elements steer everything: the cloth, the cut, the amount of embroidery.
2. Choosing the fabric and colour
We bring out the materials, lay them on the shoulder, look at them in daylight and in artificial light. For a precise colour that does not exist off the roll, we go through the dyer: you approve a small dyed sample before we start the piece.
3. Measurements
About ten measurements: shoulders, bust, waist, hips, front and back length, arm circumference, sleeve length, back width. For a takchita, we also measure for the mdamma belt. Remotely, we send you an illustrated guide to take these measurements correctly, or we work from a piece that already fits you.
4. Drawing the embroidery
We choose the motif (Fassi, Rbati, floral, geometric Amazigh), the areas (placket only, placket and cuffs, all-over) and the threads (silk, gold, silver, tone-on-tone). This is where price and timing are decided: the embroidery is often more than half the work.
5. The cut and first assembly
The pattern is drawn and cut to your measurements. The piece is assembled “in the white” — put together without the finishing — for the first fitting.
6. Fittings
One or two fittings are included. We check the shoulders, the armhole (raise your arms to dance), the length with your shoes, the ease at the waist. Every alteration is pinned then taken in. Remotely, this adjustment happens on delivery; we leave you a seam allowance for a local tailor if needed.
7. Embroidery and finishing
Once the cut is approved, the piece goes to the master artisan for the embroidery, then comes back for the sfifa, the aqad buttons, the lining and the hand-worked hem.
8. Delivery
Pressing, inspection, packing flat in a cover. In the shop, you leave with it. Remotely, we ship with tracking; allow one to two weeks for international.
Timing to expect
- Lightly embroidered piece: 10 to 15 days.
- Caftan embroidered at placket and cuffs: 3 to 4 weeks.
- Fully re-embroidered takchita: 5 to 6 weeks, sometimes more in the high wedding season (May to September).
Plan ahead: the earlier you order, the wider the choice of master artisans and slots.
Price
As with our available pieces, the price is discussed: it depends on the cloth, the embroidered area and the working time. Give your range in the first exchange — we build the project around it.
To start an order, message us on WhatsApp from the Visit us page with the occasion, the date, and one or two inspiration photos. See also How to choose your wedding caftan and The fabrics of the caftan.
Frequently asked
- How long does a bespoke caftan take?
- Three to six weeks depending on the embroidered area. A lightly embroidered piece can be ready in ten days; a fully re-embroidered takchita takes longer.
- Can you do bespoke without coming to Marrakech?
- Yes. We work from a detailed set of measurements, photos, and a fabric-and-colour sample sent for approval. Final adjustment happens on delivery, at your tailor if needed.
- What if the piece doesn't fit at the fitting?
- Alterations are built into the process: one or two fittings are included. We adjust until the piece falls right.
