How to choose your wedding caftan in Marrakech

Budget, timing, fabrics, colours, fittings, alterations and shipping: a step-by-step method for choosing a wedding caftan or takchita in Marrakech, whether you are the bride, the mother or a guest.

Choosing a wedding caftan is not something to improvise. Whether you are the bride, the mother, a sister or a guest, the approach is the same: first the role and the moment, then the colour and the fabric, finally the cut and the alterations. Here is how we guide our customers, step by step.

1. Define the role and the moment

The outfit is not thought of the same way depending on whether you take the stage or sit in the audience.

  • The bride often wears several outfits during the evening: a white or ivory takchita to open, a coloured piece (green, burgundy, midnight blue, gold) for later. Each needs its own belt.
  • The mother of the bride or groom aims for a strong piece that does not compete: a plain, very well embroidered caftan in a deep tone beats a loud print.
  • The guest looks for an elegant, re-wearable piece. A fluid caftan with no belt, embroidered at the placket and cuffs, is worn ten times over.

2. Choose the colour

A few markers that almost always work:

  • Deep tones (emerald, plum, midnight blue, terracotta) flatter most complexions and photograph well indoors.
  • White and ivory are reserved for the bride at a Moroccan wedding — avoid them as a guest.
  • Gold and champagne suit mothers and witnesses; they catch the light without shouting.
  • Be careful with very pale colours in full daylight: they are less forgiving of perspiration and marks.

3. Understand the fabrics

For a wedding piece, the cloth is half the result:

  • Silk and silk satin: fluid drape, soft light, ideal for the evening takchita.
  • Velvet: warmth and depth, superb in winter, heavy in summer.
  • Chiffon and georgette crêpe: lightness and movement, perfect for dancing.
  • Brocade and jacquard: already-worked cloth, needs little added embroidery.

We go into each fabric in The fabrics of the caftan.

4. The cut and the belt

A takchita is worn in two layers: the underdress (tahtia) and the caftan over it. The mdamma belt closes the waist and structures the whole silhouette. Choose it with the dress, never after, and match it to the dominant thread of the embroidery.

Check at the fitting: the shoulders do not pull, the armhole lets you raise your arms to dance, the hem grazes the floor with the shoes you will actually wear. Note every alteration — this is the moment.

5. Available or bespoke?

  • Available piece + alterations: the solution for short stays. One visit, a fitting, alterations ready in 24 to 48 hours.
  • Full bespoke: for a precise colour, a particular embroidery or a non-standard figure. Allow three to six weeks depending on the work. We proceed by measurements, a colour sample, then one or two fittings.

6. Budget and price

At Tazi Caftan, prices are not displayed: they depend on the cloth, the embroidered area and the working time. That is why we discuss them piece by piece, on WhatsApp or in the shop. Tell us your range from the start: it lets us show you the right pieces and adjust the embroidery work accordingly.

7. From abroad

If you are not coming to Marrakech, we work from your measurements and photos, confirm the colour on a sample we send, and ship flat, in a garment cover, with tracking. Just allow one to two weeks’ margin for international delivery.

In practice

Browse the available caftans and takchitas, pick two or three pieces, and send us the names on WhatsApp from the Visit us page. We will tell you what is still available, talk size, colour and price, and send you more photos.

Frequently asked

How long before the wedding should I choose my caftan?
For an available piece with simple alterations, allow one visit and 48 hours. For full bespoke, allow three to six weeks depending on the embroidery.
Should the takchita and belt be bought together?
Yes. The mdamma belt is chosen with the dress: it structures the silhouette and turns two soft pieces into a ceremony outfit. It is matched to the dominant thread of the embroidery.
Can I order from abroad without coming to Marrakech?
Yes. We work from your measurements and photos, confirm the colour on a sample, and ship flat with tracking. Many of our customers outside Morocco order this way.
